Things to do in West Sussex

Our location in the village of Kirdford, near Billingshurst, gives our guests the best of all possible worlds – a tranquil rural location yet within easy reach of some of the top sporting venues in the south-east, the historic cathedral city of Chichester and the magnificent vistas of the South Downs.

Motorsport at Goodwood

For the thrill of it – treat yourself to a driving experience on the motor circuit, in the tracks of iconic racing legends like Sir Stirling Moss.

At the end of June/early July, the Goodwood Festival of Speed promises rare and glamorous cars, celebrity drivers and motorbike riders. And don’t miss the excitement of the challenging hill climb for Formula 1, supercars, bikes and heritage cars.

In early September, the Goodwood Revival is a must – the romance of motor racing in the good old days all in period dress, with historic cars racing wheel-to-wheel.

Equestrian Events

Cowdray Park Polo Club – the home of British Polo, where you can watch tournaments or play a chukka yourself, but beware – the all-consuming thrill of the gallop could have you hooked.

Goodwood Racecourse – where there are 19 race days between May and October, including, of course, Glorious Goodwood in August, the highlight of the flat-racing season.

Hickstead – the location of the All-England Jumping Course hosting the Longines International Horse Show and the famous Hickstead (British Jumping) Derby, as well as prestigious dressage events.

Cycling & Walking

Off-road trails, easy bridleways and quiet rural lanes for cyclists of all abilities…or you could take on the more challenging South Downs with its stunning scenery and mountain bike trails for the not-so-fainthearted.

For walkers, there’s everything the South Downs has to offer, including the magnificent 100 mile National Trail (for the energetic with strong legs – but it’s not compulsory to do the whole thing). For the less ambitious, Kirdford has its own six-and-a-quarter mile circular walk which you could start and finish at The Half Moon Inn.

Local Attractions

The beautiful local market town, Petworth is crammed with antique shops, cafés and tearooms for a perfect English day out. Petworth House with its Capability Brown landscaped grounds, immortalised by Turner, is a National Trust property not to be missed.

Fishers Farm – fun for all the family – an adventure farm park with indoor and outdoor play, exhilarating rides and animal adventures.
